Adult Dance
  • "Corner Brook follows the Humber Road Greasers:
After almost 12 years of rocking Corner Brook, the Humber Road Greasers need no introduction. With Wilf Pardy on drums, George White on piano, bass player Dave Rowe, Wayne Neil on lead guitar and the voices of Otto Brake and Elaine Clarke, the Greasers are one of the biggest ticket draws on [Newfoundland's] west coast....While a lot of bands enjoy a good fan base, what the Greasers have could be termed as a following. Pardy said it's overwhelming to see the reception the band gets each and every time they perform. What's extraordinary, he said, is to see the same people over and over, and from the sound of the first chord the dance floor is hopping. "It's the same people and they come to all the shows," he said proudly. "They support whatever we're doing and they sing all the songs. All we have to do is say we're playing and they're there." NL Bean Supper with Toutons

  • Bar Service will be provided in the Community Hall during supper.
  • Tickets for this meal will be available during registration on Friday. Once you have your button then you may proceed to the NL Meal table to pick up your tickets.

Toutons are small pancakes made in Newfoundland of risen, standard white bread dough that is then fried.

To make Toutons, you start with 1/2 to 1 cup of cubed uncooked salt pork, which you pan fry until crisp. You remove the salt pork, keeping the fat in the frying pan - the cooking fat is what you were after. You then take risen bread dough, roll it out to about 1/4 inch (1/2 cm) thick (or take a piece of dough just a bit larger than a golf ball, and flatten it out with your hand.) You cut or form the dough into circles about 4 inches (10 cm) wide, and fry on both sides in the frying pan until golden brown, about 3 to 5 minutes per side.

Traditionally, Toutons were made with leftover dough that wasn't needed to fill the bread pans. Many people now buy frozen, unrisen bread dough specifically to make Toutons. Instead of the fat from salt pork, you can use butter, margarine or flavourless cooking oil.

Toutons are traditionally served with butter and either molasses or jam. They are often "washday bread."

Old Fashioned Baked Beans 2 lbs. dried beans 1 medium onion (sliced) ¼ cup tomato ketchup 1 tsp. mustard ¼ cup brown sugar ¾ lbs salt pork (sliced) ½ cup molasses.

Wash beans and add enough water to come 2 inches above beans, boil until tender. Put in deep casserole mixed with other ingredients and bake until crisp and brown, Serve piping hot.

Newfoundland Labrador Night

Supper is over: You have been able to relax and enjoy the Square Dancers (7:30-8:00pm). Niw is time to get ready for some true Newfoundland Fun.

At approximately 8:30pm. Darryl Cullihall will do a Recital, Memories of Reidville". Darryl was born and raised in Rocky Harbour. He is nephew to Douglas and Alice Reid and spent many summers visiting Willie and "the boys" in Reidville during his summer vacations. Darryl will share some of these experiences with the audience.

At approximately 9:00pm Uncle Jarge and his assistants will perform the famous Newfoundland Screech-In.

  • A Screech-In is a ceremony where non-Newfoundlanders or “come-from-aways” are inducted into Newfoundland culture by downing a shot of Screech Rum (Story of Screech), repeating some phrases in a Newfie dialect and kissing a cod. At the end of it all, visitors get a certificate that names them as honorary Newfoundlanders and members of the Royal Order of Screechers.

At approximately 10:00pm the Mummers will visit the field to spread more Newfoundland joy and entertainment.

  • Mummers have been a Newfoundland tradition for many years. Mummers also called "Jannies or Johnies" are Christmas revelers who disguise themselves and go door to door seeking admission. When asking permission to enter a house, voices are also disguised. This is done by breathing in, instead of out when the question, "Any mummers 'lowed in?" is posed. If permission to enter is given, Mummers will usually entertain the hosts with accordions, fiddles, mouth organs (harmonicas) guitars, etc. In some homes Mummers are offered an alcoholic drink or two, while in others, food in the form of cake and syrup or some other sweet is offered. The object of the disguise is to fool the hosts, and hosts will try to guess the identity of the mummers. If the host is successful in doing this, Mummers must lift their masks and show their real faces.
  • Check out The Mummers' Song
  • See the Video.  Be sure to come back and finish the tour.

When sun rays crown thy pine clad hills,
And summer spreads her hand,
When silvern voices tune thy rills,
We love thee, smiling land.
We love thee, we love thee,
We love thee, smiling land.

When spreads thy cloak of shimmering white,
At winter's stern command,
Thro' shortened day, and starlit night,
We love thee, frozen land.
We love thee, we love thee
We love thee, frozen land.

As blinding storm gusts fret thy shore,
And wild waves lash thy strand,
Thro' spindrift swirl, and tempest roar,
We love thee windswept land.
We love thee, we love thee
We love thee windswept land.

Don't seem like Christmas if the Mummers aren't here
Granny would say as she'd sit in her chair
Things have gone modern, I 'spose that's the cause
Christmas is not like it was

(knock, knock, knock) Any Mummers 'lowed in?
Hark what's the noise, out by the porch door
Granny 'tis mummers theres 20 or more
Her old weathered face lightens up with a grin
Any Mummers nice Mummers 'lowed in?
Come in lovely Mummers don't bother the snow
We can wipe up the water sure after you go
Sit if you can or on some Mummer's knee
Lets see if we know who ya be
There's big ones 'n tall ones 'n small ones 'n thin
Boys dressed as women and girls dressed as men
Humps on their backs an mitts on their feet
My blessed we'll die with the heat
There's only one there I think that I know
That tall feller standing o'er long side the stove
He's shakin' his fist for to make me not tell
Must be Billy from out on the hill
Don't 'spose you fine Mummers will turn down a drop
No home brew, nor alky whatever you got
Now the one with his rubber boots on the wrong feet
He's had enough for to do him all week
'Spose you can dance, yes they all nods their heads
They've been tappin' their feet ever since they came in
Now that the drinks have been all passed around
The Mummers are plankin' her down
Hold on to the lamp and be careful the stove
Don't swing Granny hard for you know that she's old
No need for to care how you buckles the floor
'Cause Mummers have danced here before
My God how hot is it, we better go
I 'low we'll all get the devil's own cold
Good night and good Christmas, Mummers me dears
Please god we will see you next year
Please god we will see you next year.
